Sand under artificial grass is not necessarily a mandatory step when laying your artificial lawn. It can be useful for certain projects, especially for levelling uneven ground. Let's find out how to lay your artificial grass perfectly.
What's the point of sand under my artificial lawn ?
One of the main reasons for adding sand under an artificial lawn is to stabilize the soil, making it flat and even. A flat, even surface is essential to guarantee the longevity of your artificial lawn. If your ground is uneven, you'll feel every bump and dip when you walk on your artificial grass, and the result of your installation will be greatly impacted.
On some sites, the addition of sand will also bring a little more comfort under your grass and help rainwater to drain away.
If you feel you need to add sand, be careful not to choose a sand that is too thick, which could prevent water from draining away. We recommend sand with a grain size of between 0/2 and 0/4, such as site sand.
How do I lay my artificial grass on sand ?
On an earthen surface, we advise you to add sand if necessary, lay your geotextile and then roll out your artificial lawn. Before adding sand, be sure to turn over the soil or even weed your garden to avoid being bothered by weeds. Then, if your soil is not flat, add 2 to 3 cm of sand over the whole surface and flatten the soil with a suitable machine.
Cover your surface with geotextile to prevent weeds from growing back, and lay it directly on the sand. Once you've decided on the direction in which you'd like to lay your artificial grass, unroll the rolls in the same direction.
Brush your artificial grass in the opposite direction to that in which it was laid, and enjoy your new relaxation area to the full !
What's the best artificial lawn for a garden ?
The best artificial grass for your garden is the one that matches your criteria and tastes. To meet the needs of all our customers, we offer you a range of artificial lawns comprising 18 different models and numerous grass products on clearance.
You'll be able to choose between lighter and darker green artificial turf, with differences in realism, feel, comfort due to the height of the blades and resilience. If you like the result of an English garden, we recommend short artificial lawns, between 20 and 25 mm high. For a little more comfort and cushioning underfoot, artificial turf heights between 30 and 40 mm are ideal.
For optimum comfort and breathtaking realism, 50 mm high strands are just what you're looking for. Our artificial lawns are also sorted by UV resistance. You can choose between a 6, 8 or 10-year warranty.
Most of our artificial grass is available cut to size, so you can order only the quantity you need. Please note, however, that our widths are fixed (1, 2, 3 or 4 m) and that each roll can be up to 30 m long.
How do I choose my artificial grass ?
To choose your artificial grass, we recommend that you first take the measurements of your surface. Remember, all rolls must be unrolled in the same direction, even for a U- or L-shaped lawn. Next, ask yourself what criteria are most important to you. Do you need a highly resilient lawn, or do you prefer a very soft one ? Is this an ornamental project, or do you have heavy traffic ? Do you prefer a lighter or darker artificial turf ?
Stocks change regularly, so be sure to order the right quantity of grass at once to ensure a uniform result. We'll deliver your artificial turf within 10 working days - that's about 15 days - to your doorstep, by appointment.
Are artificial lawns permeable ?
Artificial lawns are permeable, allowing large quantities of water to drain away. At Exelgreen, all our grass is perforated with small holes every 10 cm on the back. So if you live in a rainy region, you won't have any problems. Artificial lawns are extremely hard-wearing and durable, and can be installed on any surface.
As explained above, it's important to prepare your soil well in advance so as not to impede the proper drainage of water from your lawn. What's more, you'll be surprised to find that an artificial lawn dries much faster than a natural one. You won't have to wait for the blades to grow before you can enjoy them, and maintaining an artificial lawn is very simple.
All you need to do is brush it whenever you feel it's useful, and a little soapy water is all you need to clean it. If you'd like to find out more about the permeability of our artificial lawns, please read our dedicated blog post.
